The Shakespeare connection

Until the construction of The Globe, Shakespeare's early plays were performed at some of the first purpose-built theatres in the capital, just outside the city limits in Shoreditch. It's thought the Curtain Theatre hosted Romeo and Juliet and provided the 'wooden O' famously mentioned in Henry V.

In 1599, Shakespeare and his friends literally moved to another Shoreditch venue known as The Theatre, plank by plank, across the frozen Thames to build The Globe on The South Bank.
